Sociology of Education 2005, Vol. 78 (April): 144–164 144 Social scientists who have studied the family and those who have studied educational stratification have produced convincing evidence that parental divorce is negatively associated with educational success. Compared to children who live with both parents until adulthood, children from divorced families have lower educational expectations, poorer school attendance, and lower grades (Amato 2001; Astone and McLanahan 1991; Hanson, McLanahan, and Thomson 1998; Sun and Li 2001; Teachman et al. 1998). They are also less likely to graduate from high school or to attend college (Biblarz and Gottainer 2000; McLanahan and Sandefur 1994; Ploeg 2002; Pong and Ju 2000; Sandefur and Wells 1999). Research has suggested that mothers’ remarriage does not improve the chances of children’s high school graduation and that children from stepparent families are only marginally better off than are those from single-parent families on many educational outcomes (Astone and McLanahan 1991; McLanahan and Sandefur 1994). The educational gradient of childbearing within cohabitation in Europe.
Nearly every European Country has experienced some increase in nonmarital childbearing, largely due to increasing births within cohabitation. Relatively few studies in Europe, however, investigate the educational gradient of childbearing within cohabitation or how it changed over time. Using retrospective union and fertility histories, we employ competing risk hazard models to examine the educa...
متن کاملEducation and Cohabitation in Britain: A Return to Traditional Patterns?
Cohabitation is sometimes thought of as being inversely associated with education, but in Britain a more complex picture emerges. Educational group differences in cohabitation vary by age, time period, cohort, and indicator used. Well-educated women pioneered cohabitation in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s. In the most recent cohorts, however, the less educated have exceeded the best educated in...
متن کاملPathways to educational homogamy in marital and cohabiting unions.
There is considerable disagreement about whether cohabitors are more or less likely to be educationally homogamous than married couples. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, I reconcile many of the disparate findings of previous research by conducting a "stock and flow" analysis of assortative cohabitation and marriage. I find that cohabitors are less likely to be educatio...
متن کاملCohabitation and Children’s Family Instability
This study estimates how much children’s family instability is missed when we do not count transitions into and out of cohabitation, and examines early life course trajectories of children to see whether children who experience maternal cohabitation face more family instability than children who do not. Using data from the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth, analyses show that adding transit...
متن کاملLinks between premarital cohabitation and subsequent marital quality, stability, and divorce: A comparison of covenant versus standard marriages
We extend prior research on the association between premarital cohabitation and marital outcomes by investigating whether covenant marriage, which entails more stringent requirements for divorce, minimizes the deleterious eVects of cohabitation on subsequent marital quality and stability. Using a unique longitudinal data set of covenant and standard newlywed couples in Louisiana, we Wnd that co...
